🌟 Understanding TENS Machines: A Guide for Expecting Parents 🌟

Hello!

Recently, during my birth planning sessions and conversations with clients, TENS machines have come up quite a bit. This has inspired me to create a post to share some valuable information about them with all of you.

What are TENS Machines?

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machines are small devices that use low-voltage electrical currents to help manage pain. They are often used in various medical settings, but many expectant mothers find them particularly helpful during labour. One of the key ways TENS machines work is by stimulating the release of endorphins, our body's natural pain relievers. These endorphins help to reduce the perception of pain and can create a sense of well-being, making the experience of labour more manageable.

What Do They Do?

TENS machines deliver gentle electrical impulses through pads placed on your skin. These impulses not only help block pain signals from reaching the brain but also encourage the production of endorphins. This dual action can lead to a more comfortable experience during labour.

Are They Safe?

Absolutely! TENS machines are considered safe for use during pregnancy, but there are a few things to keep in mind. If you plan to use water during your labour or birth, you'll need to completely remove the TENS machine before you get in the water, including the pads, as it is not compatible with the water. Safety is always a priority, and being aware of how and when to use it is key.

Benefits of TENS Machines:

- Effective pain relief without medication

- Non-invasive and easy to use

- Can be used at home or in a birthing centre

- Helps you maintain mobility during labour

- Stimulates the release of endorphins for natural pain relief

- Allows you to manage your comfort levels

Personally, I found TENS machines incredibly helpful during the later stages of my pregnancy. As someone with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, I struggled with significant back pain. Using a TENS machine made a world of difference for me!

A Tip for Expecting Parents:

If you’re considering using a TENS machine during labour, I highly recommend trying it out beforehand. It’s a bit like Marmite – you either love it or hate it! Familiarising yourself with the sensation and settings before the big day can help you feel more prepared and confident.

You can easily hire a TENS machine online, or if you're one of my doula or birth planning clients, I'm happy to provide rental options directly!

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want to learn more. Here’s to a positive and empowered birthing experience! 💕✨
